Community

Brett is a strong believer in community involvement.  He has worked on many pro bono projects, volunteers as an emergency services first responder for Marine Rescue NSW, and otherwise commits to supported charities.

Some of Brett’s projects are showcased below.

Pro bono project for Cambodian government advising on development of its first ever stock exchange

Eagle Corporate Advisers (ECA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with international development agency, Australian Business Volunteers (ABV) in connection with a project for the Cambodian government.

With ABV to assist with the development of Cambodia’s first-ever securities market, this MoU allowed ECA to contribute legal and market research support to the Cambodian government for the duration of the project.

“ABV possesses great talent and ability in managing what was a complex project,” said Brett R. Eagle, CEO of ECA. “It was critical to the project’s success and we were very pleased to partner with them towards that end. Our challenge at the end of the day was to advance the interests of the nation in both local and global markets, and that’s exciting.”

We reviewed and advised on such matters as the compliance requirements for securities trading and advisory businesses and/or market makers, minimum capital requirements for such parties, licensing and operating rules for those wanting to operate a stock exchange, policies around dual listing approvals, anti-money laundering rules and other matters.

It was a rare opportunity to look behind the rules and regulations that govern a capital market (rather than trying to guide in interpreting them) and ask, ‘Why?’ ‘What’s the purpose of the regulations and how effective are they at providing a solution to the issue being addressed?’ ‘What do other countries do?’

Marine Rescue NSW

Brett is a volunteer member of Marine Rescue NSW.  He serves at the Middle Harbour, Sydney, base as skipper of one of the rescue vessels.  This typically involves 1-2 days per month and otherwise on emergency call-out.

Marine Rescue NSW is the state’s official volunteer marine rescue service, committed to saving lives on the water.  It has a network of 45 strategically-located units on the NSW coastline, Lord Howe Island and inland on the Alpine Lakes in the Snowy Mountains and the Murray River at Moama.

There are over 100 vessels including ocean-going vessels, vessels to serve shallower, inland waterways, as well as newly commissioned jet-ski vessels.  There are over 3,000 volunteers.

Brett has volunteered with Marine Rescue NSW for over ten years.

Wild Oats racing yacht – 2019 – 2023

For four years Brett skippered and campaigned the Wild Oats racing yacht.  During such time he built a sports-focused community of more than 30 people who sailed regularly in the ocean and inshore races, and an extended community of over 70 people, that included spouses, children, moms and dads of the sailors, who were always keen for updates on the big, multi-day races.  The end of year and birthday celebration gatherings were a hoot!

This community became a true life line support for many folk through the Covid19 pandemic lock-downs and associated stresses.  It was a high priority to take care of everyone!

As Skipper/owner Brett has competed in many thousands of miles of offshore sailing races, including Sydney to Hobart races.

This yacht is the original Wild Oats that the Oatley family had custom built, and which started the ‘Bob Oatley’ legacy, that eventually led to the commissioning of the Wild Oats XI maxi yacht, nine-times line honours winner of the Sydney to Hobart yacht race.

Wild Oats (the original) has also won the Sydney to Hobart race – twice!  Her photograph hangs in the Maritime Museum of Tasmania, in Hobart.

Brett continues to compete in the big ocean races, often as navigator, helm, 2iC.
